The Vans Warped Tour 2010 will feature a Ska Stage, with The Uptones, The Untouchables and more ska greats, performing roots, two-tone, and 3rd wave ska classics. The brainchild of The Ska Parade’s Tazy Phyllipz, the Ska Stage will serve as an introduction to ska for the uninitiated, and a joyous skanking celebration for dedicated ska fans. Rumor has it the Ska Shrine will also be open to the skanking public at several west coast Warped dates. Watch this space and the Warped and Ska Parade sites for details as they emerge about this skantastic event.
Apparently Montreal’s beloved Kingpins’ L’Aventurier mp3 has grown cyberlegs, and is running amok in the blog-o-sphere. That’s a good thing. More ska = more fun. More fun = a better world. The equation is simple. Carry on.
Hats off to Barb at Music Mondays on Mashable.com. Included in this week’s posts is some SKA from the bay area’s Uptones. “Ridiculous,” a Ska anthem, was her first SKA post! Let’s bug her for more. Make a comment here.
The Uptones bring SKA to Oakland’s Chinatown.

the slide show by Alycia Ramirez-Leatherman before they go onstage.
LOOKING GOOD!
Ska-T is inspired, he just watched ‘Goodfellas’ in a video kiosk down the street.
Jeanne could care less.
Before Sublime (and all the bands after that seem to squeeze juicy ska reggae dub vibes from the California surf and sun!) The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies were cookin’ up some sunshine of their own in the rainy northwest town of Eugene, Oregon. Their name was a sort of deliberate confrontation with the hyper-PC reality of their surroundings, and it worked, garnering them plenty of controversy, critique, and, well, packed houses full of sweaty happy dancers! Here’s a taste of their musically sophisticated work – a charming song with epic reggae horns and panoramic vocal harmonies. Continue reading ‘Sweet Summer Sounds of The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’
Here’s a nice article about Sister Mary Ignatius Davies, the nun who fostered ska, rocksteady and reggae. One of the unsung heroes of Jamaican music, she ran the music program at the Alpha School for wayward boys in Kingston, famous for the seemingly endless list of brilliant musical stars it produced. Found this on the SF Vintage Reggae Society blog (which has a GR8 music stream!) from a post at BayAreaSka. Buster loves teh Internets.
Yes, it’s true! The U.S. Post Office has authorized a postage stamp memorializing the Ska Shrine. And yes, you can buy these new issued stamps and help spread the word about Ska.
This just in! Famed concert Promoter Peps Jara was joined in mad skanking revelry at the Ska Shrine by Radiation Boy and Uptones guitarist and Ska Shrine builder, Moose Lethridge.
The spectacle was documented by cinematographer Jake Small, with assistance from noted skanking fool, Matthew King Kaufman.
